The primary course objective is to develop student’s understanding of key political phenomena related to contemporary Balkans and to develop critical skills towards political issues in the Balkans. By the end of the course the student will be able to learn the historical background of the Balkans and contemporary Balkan issues. More specifically the student will be able to examine inter-ethnic tensions in the Balkans, great power policies towards the region, issues amongst Balkan states, dissolution of Yugoslavia and its consequences, etc.

This course examines Europe's political history and its current political composition. The course will comprise the European political history from 15th century onwards including Renaissance and Reformation, the Treaty of Westphalia, the great power diplomacy from 16th to 19th centuries, the First and the Second World Wars, the Cold War and the decolonization period.

The students who succeeded in this course will be able to examine the European political history from past to the present, comprehend the global politics in different periods of history, and analyze the rise of nationalism and nation-state entity in Europe.
