The course aims to equip the participating students with the ability to recognize the function and type of any text within the given language and culture system. Discourse, register, context, skopos, commissioning and the inseparability of the text are some of the key concepts that will be introduced and discussed in order to facilitate the translation process. Other than these fundamental concepts of translation in terms of translation theory are discussed at introductory level and more importantly basic method of translation is examined. In this respect, various examples are chosen in both Turkish and English. Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to locate words, to identify possible meanings and to select the correct contextual meaning in another language. They are expected to identify the most common problems in translation, and translate various texts from English to Turkish and vice versa both in class and as home assignments.
